Valmiera, June 18, 2007. – Vidzeme University College reminds that only two weeks are left to apply for the 9th Baltic International Summer School, which will take place August 5-19 in Valmiera and Riga, Latvia. As already reported, the topic of the summer school will be “The Future of Public Communication in the Age of New Media” and the event will unite communication students and lecturers from all over the world.

Lecturers from the Baltics, Europe and the United States will lead different classes and workshops. Dr. Cindy Price, lecturer at the University of Wyoming Department of Communications (United States), Mr. Richard Lining, Board Member of IPRA (United Kingdom), Janis Garancs, artist of multimedia (Latvia, Germany), Lauris Liberts, founder of internet portal ”” (Latvia) are only a few among the 16 lecturers and instructors. After lectures students will also have an opportunity to participate in practical hands-on workshops and produce a web site about the future of communication. Also various social activities are scheduled during the summer school, for instance, field trips, sports evening, Baltic film evening, folk dance evening and international food party, also a visit to the Riga Gulf to experience the beauty of the Baltic coastline.

August 11 is scheduled as European Information Day and is organized in conjunction with European Parliament Information Office in Riga. Participants will have an opportunity to acquaint themselves about the communication issues of the European Parliament, to meet members of the European Parliament and independent European issues expert.

The Baltic International Summer School has also decided to surprise all the participants with a new, stunning look – the event’s logo has been redesigned and the brand has been changed. Now everything coming from the summer school will be decorated with a new logo, saying out loud at you: “My absolutely best summer in the Baltics!” The authors of the new brand are Andris Jurga, communications student and Kaspars Ruklis, lecturer at the communications department at Vidzeme University, both also involved in the organization of the summer school.

“We wanted to give the old BISS a new look,” says Kaspars Ruklis, one of the directors of the summer school and also the author of the new slogan, “we needed something lighter, more positive, more suitable for the summer and more attractive! Summer is the season for fun after all! Modern brands tend to be slightly provoking and they often do not even mention the product’s old, boring name, but give it a new, exciting one. We did the same. Now we are proclaiming what our past participants have been saying for years—this summer school is indeed a great summer experience for students and they not only learn but also have a good time and make new friends between and after classes!”

The Baltic International Summer School is organised by Vidzeme University College and Ministry of Education and Science Republic of Latvia. European Information Days is organised by the help of European Parliament Information bureau of Latvia. The summer school also supported by the Embassy of the United States in Latvia, Municipality of Valmiera, Hansabanka, Applied Information Service and Latvian Railway.
