Vidzeme University College Announces 9th Baltic International Summer School

Valmiera, March 22, 2007. – Vidzeme University College is pleased to announce that it welcomes applications from students all over the world for 9th Baltic International Summer School. This year the summer school will take place August 5-19 in Valmiera, Latvia, and its theme will be “The Future of Public Communication in the Age of New Media.” Students are welcome to apply via summer school’s web site at

“The summer school has become the best summer tradition at Vidzeme University College and since 1999 it has welcomed a total of 287 students from 37 different countries,” says Vija Daukste, the Rector of Vidzeme University College, “and for the most of them this experience has started a life-long love for the Baltics. Students often come here knowing and caring little about the Baltics but they leave with tears in their eyes, and indeed, often they return here the next summer.”

Vidzeme University College looks forward to this event in August and encourages students interested in journalism, media, public relations, multimedia and other related disciplines, as well as interested and motivated students from other disciplines to apply. The application deadline will be May 1 for students applying for a scholarship and June 30 for all other students.

The summer school this year will discuss the issues of communication and new media. Lecturers from the Baltics, Europe and the United States will speak about various aspects of changes to the process of communication in the era of on-line media. Students will also have an opportunity to participate in practical hands-on workshops and produce a web site.

The Baltic International Summer School is a wonderful opportunity to spend two summer weeks in the Baltics and learn about the topic of the summer school as well as experience the joys of the Baltics and meet new friends from other countries.

Vidzeme University College was formed in 1996 to promote economic, political and social development by providing higher education to the people of Vidzeme region. Since 2001 the school has the status of state university college. At present there are 1325 students and 50 full time lecturers at Vidzeme University College. The university offers five professional study programmes: Communication and Public Relations, Political Science, Business administration, Information Technology and Tourism Organization and Management, as well as several master level programs.
