August 3 to 17, 2014, local and foreign students are offered the opportunity to participate in the Baltic International Summer School 2014 (BISS) taking place in Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences, Valmiera, in order to deepen their knowledge in organizing international tourism events and in development globalization issues. Two summer school weeks will host two courses and will include lectures, field trips and seminars to be delivered by lecturers from Latvia, Portugal, Poland, Slovakia, Estonia, Italy, United Kingdom, Cyprus and Turkey.
One of BISS courses - Erasmus Intensive programme "Development globalization: rural areas and small towns prospects in a globalized world" will focus on local businesses and organizations looking at how their products and services can be made more accessible and interesting not only for local audiences, but on a larger scale. Programme is funded by the Lifelong Learning Programme.
During practical classes the students will carry out case studies about topics such as business development from the globalisation point of view, the internationalization of education, youth policy in municipalities, networking and attraction of resources, and community development. In addition to lectures and practical work, field trips will be organized to get an insight into local companies.
Baltic International Summer School course „International Tourism and Events Management/ ITEM" will offer students an exclusive opportunity to participate and make a case study work in European capital city "Riga 2014" during its celebration time. Bringing together theory and practice, the participants will explore, evaluate and learn from live cases and professionals. Practical advice and recommendations of foreign experts, as well as "view from outside" from summer school participants will identify ideas for tourism and local business development. The programme has been designed in collaboration with Klaipeda University, Estonian School of Hotel and Tourism Management EHTE, Manchester Metropolitan University, The International Centre of Studies on the Tourist Economy - CISET in Italy and The Association of Hotels and Restaurants of Latvia within the project International Tourism and Events Management (2012-2014) ITEM, supported by Lifelong Learning Programme.
Since 1999 BISS is a traditional summer training programme taking place in Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences. So far 583 participants from 64 countries have participated in the summer school.
