Students from 17 Countries Gathering to Experience their “Absolutely Best Summer in the Baltics”

In early August Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (Vidzemes Augstskola - ViA) in cooperation with international lecturers is organizing Baltic International Summer School. Local and foreign students will deepen their knowledge about the impact of globalization on rural-areas and small-town development as well as make specific suggestions for Valmiera and Vidzeme rural-are and small-towns to enhance their visibility to the world. Another group of participants will learn about the specifics of international tourism and event management from real cases.
 
The main goal of Baltic International Summer School (BISS) is to promote international cooperation between politic science and tourism management study programmes. Other goals include international visibility by attracting students and lecturers from all over the Europe and other countries. Practical recommendations and advice from foreign experts can be used to see “view from the outside”, and allow noticing the new ideas for tourism and local business development. The summer school is also a platform for testing the new modules and developments in the joint master’s programme in International Tourism Events Management.
 
This year project is taking place in two parallel programmes with emphasis on international tourism and event management and rural-area’s and small-towns’ role in globalized world, with specific focus on Vidzeme region. All participants will get international communication practice not only from the lectures, but also from field-trips, workshops, film nights and even Valmiera city festival during the participation in BISS.
 
ViA is organizing the summer school for the 15th time. The long existence of this programme proves that ViA and Valmiera is attractive from the international students’ point of view.
 
This summer BISS is gathering 65 students from 17 countries - Ukraine, Belarus, United Kingdom, Azerbaijan, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Spain, Slovenia, Uzbekistan, Italia, Lithuania, Germany, Portugal, Turkey, Slovakia, Poland and Latvia. During these 15 years there have been more than 330 students from all over the world.
 
BISS course “International tourism and event management” is funded as a part EU project “Master’s in International Tourism and Event Management/ITEM” with support from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia and Valmiera City Council. The course “Glocalizing Development: Development Perspectives of Rural Regions and Small Towns in Globalized World” is being implemented as an Erasmus Intensive Programme.
