International Summer School Devoted to Environmental Awareness Issues
News created - 28.07.2010

From August 4 to 18, 2010, Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (ViA) is organizing the 2nd programme of this year’s Baltic International Summer School - "Environmental Awareness. Communication. Interpretation.” realized within Erasmus Intensive Programme framework. The project will involve students and lecturers from partner universities in Finland, Turkey, the Netherlands, USA, Canada, and Latvia.

"This program aims to develop awareness of the environment we all live in and influence. We will explore a variety of conceptions about environmental awareness - different interpretations. If there are different interpretations, there's also a necessity to communicate and tell different visions and understand others. Therefore, the programme title includes main planned lesson keywords - environmental awareness, communication and interpretation," says content manager and ViA lecturer Zane Kalnina.

Summer school participants will explore a variety of viewpoints, experiences, opportunities and challenges of environmental issues. In seminars and lectures participants will look for solutions to the natural and cultural resources management and its use for leisure, tourism or educational purposes. Lecture and workshop leaders include professors from Latvia, the Netherlands and Turkey, USA and Canada. For example, Gregory N. Taff from the University of Memphis (USA) will teach how to use geographic information systems in forest resources management, and professor Paul FJ Eagles from University of Waterloo (Canada) will talk about the organization of tourism in parks and protected areas. In practical workshops students will go to the Gauja National Park, Northern Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve, Gaiziņkalns Nature Park and other places to meet entrepreneurs in Vidzeme who have found their original interpretation of environmentally friendly activities, such as creating nature trails, managing objects of cultural history or building unique houses.

Summer school programme "Environmental Awareness. Communication. Interpretation." is realized as Erasmus Intensive Programme with the support from the European Commission. Erasmus Intensive programme is designed to bring together students from several universities for an intensive, exciting, interdisciplinary and international way of learning specialist topics. The summer school is also supported by the Government of Canada and Fulbright Specialist Programme.
