BISS 2017 talks about the dangers of being clueless in media environment

    The 19th Baltic International Summer School has officially begun in Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (ViA). From May 10 until May 19 participants form Latvia and abroad will take part in lectures, workshops, and social events related to this year’s topic “Media literacy and democracy” which focuses on media environment, its risks and many possibilities it has to offer.
    The aim of this intensive program is to make communication and journalism students more savvy media users and media content producers, able to approach media content in a more analytical and critical manner.
    Agnese Karaseva, Head of communication and media studies in ViA and one of the BISS program creators, says: „The aim of BISS 2017 is to give the chance to students from two universities to learn more about information environment, about its challenges, which is important for these students not only as media users, but also as future media professionals.” 
    Participants will attend Lectures and workshops by teachers from Latvia and abroad, they will analyze media messages and create group projects of their own. Also, BISS participants will go on study trips and visits, experience intercultural environment, and take part in exciting and fun social events.
The program was formed by professionals from Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences and Riga Stradins University. 
    BISS is a traditional summer education program which takes place in the Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences every year since 1999. Over years, there have been over 600 participants from 65 countries who have taken part in this program. For a large part of participants this experience has raised interest in Latvia and the Baltic countries.
