Baltic International Summer School Participants Presented their National Culture

Moving with the music and singing along, Valmiermuiza brewery gathered a significant number of local citizens of Valmiera and visitors to watch the Baltic International Summer School (BISS) participants in the Song and Dance Festival  2014. The national performances is a summer school activity that attracts large attention each year.

Temperamental Portuguese sang their traditional Fado, Cypriots demonstrated the most popular Greek dance - Sirtaki, the guests from Slovakia showed the national dance- Karichka, the participant from the farthest place Mexico showed modern Mexican Mariachi, the participants from the neighbouring country Lithuania performed an old song, as well as the national dance following by many more exciting performances.

Summer school participants also took care of their national costumes, for example the participant from Mexico brought not only the national costume, but also the well-known sombrero. The visitor commented Turkish performance, "I came to the festival with my family to see participants from different countries and their performances, representatives from Turkey were very energetic, especially the beautiful Turkish girl dancing," said Paula.

The concert was attended by more than 50 participants from 12 countries - Latvia, Lithuania, Italy, Uzbekistan, Slovakia, Germany, Turkey, Mexico, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Poland and Portugal.

Song and Dance Festival aimed to introduce local citizens and visitors of the city, as well as other BISS participants with different national traditions and cultures, to broaden their horizons and to promote cross-cultural communication.

Since 1999 BISS is a traditional summer training programme, which is organized by Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences. It is organized with the support of the European Commission Lifelong Learning Programme and Valmiera City. So far 634 participants from 64 countries have participated. For many participants this experience had raised their interest about Latvia and the Baltic countries.
