In solemn atmosphere on Monday, June 22, Baltic International Summer School (BISS) official opening ceremony brought together participants, lecturers, academic and administrative staff to celebrate the opening of 17th Baltic International Summer School, hosted by Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences.
During their speeches participants admitted, that they are glad to be in Valmiera, even thought it is their first time visiting Latvia or even being abroad. By introducing themselves, students talked about their countries and expectations from summer school. The Rector of Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences Gatis Krūmiņš in his speech admitted that this year’s summer school has gathered students and lecturers from different personal and professional backgrounds from all over the world.
Following day participants were preparing for the traditional summer solstice “Jāņi” celebration. With the support of Baiba Pāvule-Malnača participants made flower crowns and learned about summer solstice and “Jāņi” traditions. In the evening international group went to summer solstice celebration venue in Mazsalaca, hosted by Austris Grasis. During celebration students together with local people were singing traditional Ligo songs, they were dancing and enjoying wonderful celebration despite heavy rain. Around midnight the festive bonfire was lit and participants continued to dance in the live music rhythms.
Baltic International summer school is not only a place for studies, but also a platform for different cultures, which allows participants to gain international contacts and exchange experience. BISS has been an excellent example for the fact, that these projects are a great starting point for raising participants’ interest about Valmiera, Latvia and Baltic region.
Baltic International Summer School “International Tourism and Events Management” from June 21 to July 2 takes place in Valmiera for the 17th time in a row. Baltic International Summer School is gathering 11 students from 9 different countries as Croatia, Mexico, Italy, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Belgium.
The project is implemented with support of State Education Development Agency, Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences and Valmiera Municipality.
